This Downtown Cajun restaurant is run by siblings from Baton Rouge who expertly prepare shrimp and grits, gumbo, red beans, po’ boys, and plenty of fried seafood. Southern food can be a tricky cuisine to navigate for plant-based diners, but Los Angeles has vegan options covered at Crystals Soul Cafe. Chef Marcus Christiana-Beniger is always working on something new or busy preparing house-made andouille sausages, muffulettas, beignets, and po’ boys from his Chinatown kitchen. Follow Little Jewel of New Orleans on Instagram to keep track of what’s new and happening at the restaurant.
Gulf Shrimp Po-Boy
Creole and Cajun food is some of the nation’s most coveted and it’s easy to see why. The mere mention of jambalaya, gumbo, fried okra, etouffee, or the gloriously messy seafood boil is a surefire way to bring on an appetite. Los Angeles boasts an abundance of Louisiana flavors due to the Second Great Migration from 1940 to 1970, which saw millions of Black Southerners moving to California.

It’s dreamy to sit on the patio or balcony while taking in a hearty Monte Cristo, gumbo, or chicken jambalaya pasta. Darrow’s New Orleans Grill whips up the classics like beignets, shrimp and grits, and fried catfish. If dining at Darrow’s during Mardis Gras or Fat Tuesday, there might even be a live brass band to accompany the meal. When wandering around the Original Farmers Market, follow the distinct scent of garlic, onion, paprika, and cayenne emanating from the 41-year-old restaurant Gumbo Pot.

The light rail line runs from East Los Angeles to downtown Santa Monica mostly along streets, and not all of the crossings have gates. In Madison, a scrum broke out early Wednesday after police with shields removed all but one tent and shoved protesters. Four officers were injured, including a state trooper who was hit in the head with a skateboard, authorities said. Several students who spoke during the news conference said they had to rely on each other, not the police, for support as they were attacked, and that many in the pro-Palestinian encampment remained peaceful and did not engage with counter-protesters.
Exposition Boulevard was closed in both directions during the initial investigation. Metro said its train service would be limited and buses would be used to get passengers through the crash area. Late Tuesday, New York City police officers entered Columbia's campus and cleared an encampment, along with Hamilton Hall, where a stream of officers used a ladder to climb through a second-floor window, and police said protesters inside presented no substantial resistance. A large crowd of students, alumni and neighbors gathered on campus steps outside the barricaded area of tents, sitting as they listened and applauded various speakers and joined in pro-Palestinian chants. Overheard television cameras showed students in the barricaded area passing out goggles and helmets, as well as setting up medical aid stations. A small group of students holding signs and wearing T-shirts in support of Israel and Jewish people gathered nearby.
One student described needing to go to the hospital after being hit in the head by an object wielded by counter-protesters. The chaotic scenes unfolded early Wednesday after police burst into a building occupied by anti-war protesters at Columbia University on Tuesday night, breaking up a demonstration that had paralyzed the New York school. For hours, officers warned over loudspeakers that there would be arrests if the crowd did not disperse. Police helicopters hovered and the sound of flash-bangs pierced the air.
The law enforcement presence and continued warnings stood in contrast to the scene that unfolded the night before, when counter-demonstrators attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment, throwing traffic cones, releasing pepper spray and tearing down barriers. Fighting continued for several hours before police stepped in, and no one was arrested. At least 15 protesters suffered injuries, and the tepid response by authorities drew criticism from political leaders as well as Muslim students and advocacy groups. Measure your ingredients correctly. For perfect cookie dough every time, use dry measuring cups for dry ingredients and liquid measuring cups (like Pyrex glass measuring cups) for wet ingredients. When measuring the flour, spoon it into the cup and level with a knife; do not pack the flour down. Save the “packing down” for when you’re measuring the brown sugar, which should be packed to ensure there are no air pockets.
Then, make and chill the cookie dough.

I followed the recipe as closely as possible. They were delicious and dissapeared quickly!! Quite different from Toll House style. These are divine and perfect and I’ll have to bake another batch tomorrow without the water to see if it makes an actual difference.

Miss Wakefield fully expected the chocolate to melt and create a chocolate cookie. Store dough, covered, in refrigerator for up to 1 week or in freezer for up to 8 weeks. Yes, you can replace the all-purpose flour with most gluten-free flours or free flour blends. Be mindful that this may alter the texture slightly.
Ingredients
Used French butter and added 4 oz broken-up high-quality dark chocolate. I highly recommend pure vanilla extract (not imitation vanilla flavoring) for its superior flavor. These are well worth the time needed to grate the sugar cone.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Day and the accidental origin of this American staple - CNN
Chocolate Chip Cookie Day and the accidental origin of this American staple.
We all strive for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, usually the cookie we remember from childhood. My aunt made the best ones from the recipe on the bag of Baker's. Her secret (which I swore I would never tell my mother) was creaming (in a mixer) the butter and sugars for 3 minutes then a minute after each egg. And she put them in the fridge for 30 minutes and returned the batter to the fridge between baking batches. Beat (cream) the butter and sugars.
Beat the softened butter, brown and white sugars, and vanilla with an electric mixer on medium speed. Sift and whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. This is the famous, back-of-the-bag, chocolate chip cookie recipe. The formula is straightforward, easy, and never disappoints.
I found that doing so creates a wonderfully fudgy cookie with dense and ever-so-slightly doughy centers. Plus, you get to save yourself some time since there’s no waiting for the butter to come to room temperature. The Toll House cookie recipe is the original recipe, and it holds its place as the most popular cookie for a good reason. The blend of white sugar and brown sugar in the recipe gives a unique flavor and contributes to the perfect texture – a crispy edge with a chewy center.

Make sure your dough balls go onto a cool baking sheet. Mrs. Wakefield's obituary in the NYT says she chilled the dough overnight. Also, why omit (or include) the teaspoon of hot water?
Scoop out your cookie portions and freeze them in a single layer on your baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer the frozen cookie dough into a sealable freezer storage bag. It's best to label your cookie dough with the date made and the temperature needed for baking. Cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes and then remove to wire racks to cool completely. The most iconic chocolate chip cookie is crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and loaded with melty morsels of chocolate chips throughout.
Combine the wet and dry ingredients. Gradually add the flour mixture to the bowl of creamed ingredients. You can use whatever mix of nuts you want, as long as the total volume equals 1 cup. If you want a classic flavor, I recommend pairing ½ cup pecans and ½ cup walnuts. But first, let’s talk about why I’m sharing this very famous cookie recipe as opposed to one of my own.
Old recipes are interesting and sometimes amazing. The history of the Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie dates back to 1938 when it was created by Ruth Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts. Ruth was known for her delicious home-cooked meals and desserts, but this particular creation quickly garnered fame as the first-ever chocolate chip cookie.
I’ll be heading to our Food City, which caterers to south of the border cuisine, to pick up some piloncillo first thing tomorrow. Cooking has always been a huge part of my life, and I’ve been experimenting with recipes in the kitchen for as long as I can remember. As a leader in baking for more than 80 years, Ruth's innovative spirit continues to drive Nestlé Toll House today. With a strong focus on new product innovations, the iconic brand is constantly expanding its offering to meet the changing demands of the modern baker. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after every addition.

Although walnuts were my favorite in the recipe, both hazelnuts and pecans came in at a close second. Toasting nuts brings out more flavorful oils within the nuts themselves, leading to deeper flavors. You also improve their texture by adding snap and crunchiness. Welcome to Crazy for Crust, where I share recipes that are sometimes crazy, often with a crust, and always served with a slice of life. However, the longer they sit, the staler and less flavorful they become. So even if you have roasted nuts on hand, I suggest that you toast them anyway. But we did make a few extremely tiny changes to our method. According to both The New Yorker and The Toast, the truth is much more boring. It turns out that Ruth, a talented recipe developer and pastry chef, specifically developed a chocolate chip studded cookie to pair with ice cream. The resulting recipe was featured on the incredibly popular The Betty Crocker Cooking School of the Air radio program.

Most chocolate chips are made with cheap chocolate. The chocolate chips are pumped with additives like paraffin wax and palm oil to help them keep their shape even after being baked in the oven. These additives compromise the chocolate chips’ flavor and texture, making them taste waxy. This recipe uses slightly more flour than the original in comparison to the amount of butter in the recipe. Used 16 oz of chocolate chips, chilled minutes as several recommended, I cooked for 12 minutes.
I would love to hear about your experience making it. If people are having trouble grating piloncillo, you can microwave it for 30 seconds and you will be able to grate or chop it much more easily. Diamond is actually much lighter so the recipe is correct. When I first started using Diamond by weight, it looks like crazy amount of salt but the lightness gives much better distribution especially for baking recipes. Sustainably sourcing ingredients is also key to a great tasting cookie. They are crisp around the edges and soft and chewy in the middle.
Technically, both bittersweet and semisweet chocolate are considered dark chocolate… but you never know. Because of this, I advise you to ignore these bars and stick with the ones above that list their cocoa percentages fo you know what you’re getting. Your butter might have been too warm, or your flour measurement was off.

Next, crack the 2 eggs into the dry ingredients, add a splash of vanilla extract, and pour in the browned butter. The government funds halfway houses and offers less privacy but more structure than alternative sober living communities. Still, after the 2003 California Attorney General’s opinion, many cities are placing rules of their own against sober living homes. Sober living is like living in a dorm with people in addiction recovery. When you leave drug addiction treatment, it can be difficult to jump back into life. Even though you’ve gotten rid of the chemical within your body, your brain still has ways of fantasizing about the high [3]. According the California State Library, the house rules set up in a sober living house must be respectful to the residents, the neighbors, and the community.
Residents must adhere to the house rules, which can be a significant adjustment. There’s also the challenge of living in close quarters with others, which can be difficult for some. Most transitional housing programs are supported by government funding and private partnerships. Prices vary, but most of the time it costs about the same as it would cost to live in a modest apartment or home.
For many who have been through drug or alcohol rehabilitation, making an immediate transition to daily life can be overwhelming. Halfway houses provide a supportive community and structured environment to ease this transition. In a compassionate tone, let’s explore the role, benefits, and significance of halfway houses in the journey of recovery. Halfway houses offer a unique opportunity for individuals transitioning from addiction treatment to independent living.
For anyone in recovery, considering a stay in a halfway house could be a pivotal step towards a successful, sober life. Both halfway houses and sober living homes provide transitional residency for young men who have completed rehab but are not year ready to live independently. Additionally, both types of homes have structured environments and the support many young men need in early recovery. When you have completed your initial rehab treatment for substance abuse or addiction, it is common for many young men to consider transitioning to a halfway house or sober living facility.

Halfway houses are residential facilities that offer a supportive and structured environment for individuals recovering from addiction or other disorders. They provide a balance between the intense supervision of inpatient treatment and the independence of real life. Recovery residences, more commonly known as sober living homes, are dedicated to helping people re-enter society after receiving treatment for alcohol or drug addiction. The homes are usually run by a rehab facility, a person in recovery or residents who have maintained sobriety for extended periods of time. Halfway houses can also help people with other mental health disorders find stable housing after mental health treatment. Transitional living environments for people with a history of homelessness may also be called halfway houses.

In fact, many former residents return to offer their own insight, as well as guidance to those now living in the home. RRCs help individuals on parole gradually rebuild their ties to the community and facilitate supervising their activities during this readjustment phase. A sober living home offers a wider range of structure and support options and ongoing recovery programs for its residents. In addition, residents are not limited in the length of time they can remain.

They are similar to recovery residences because most forbid alcohol or drug use, and many provide similar support services. While sober living housing costs may be higher, they do offer more amenities than halfway houses typically do. This can allow residents to better focus on their sobriety, in a comfortable environment that’s very similar to what they’d experience in their own home. Halfway houses are transitional living spaces for sober individuals who have either completed an addiction treatment program or finished serving time in prison.

Homicides up nearly 27% in Charlotte through 3rd quarter of 2022; overall violent crime down, police say
Conversely, neighborhoods on the city's outskirts tend to boast lower population density, along with reduced unemployment and poverty rates, contributing to a safer environment. Among the secure neighborhoods in Charlotte are exemplars such as Eastover, Wessex Square and Hembstead, whereas Pinecrest, Lincoln Heights and Lakewood grapple with an above-average reported crime rate. This underscores the necessity for thorough evaluation across multiple neighborhoods, given their notable variations in crime rates. Charlotte ranks among the bottom 10% of all U.S. cities reporting violent crime, earning its reputation as one of the nation's most dangerous areas.

Many of the cars stolen happened during the summer around the time a TikTok video challenged people to steal Kias and Hyundais. The department touted gun seizures as part of its successes in cutting down on violent crime; such seizures were up 8% in 2022, with more than 3,000 guns taken off of Charlotte's streets. Other highlights from CMPD included tackling reckless bike groups, street racing, illegal gambling, catalytic converter thefts, stolen vehicles, and more. New details emerged a day after police said four law enforcement officers were killed and four others were wounded in a shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, while trying to serve a warrant Monday afternoon.

Jennings earlier said that all of the officers are expected to make a full recovery. Elliott leaves behind a wife and one child, the statement said. Jennings said the suspect used an AR-15-style rifle and a .40-caliber handgun and had additional ammunition for both guns. Cooper later arrived in Charlotte, the state's largest city, to meet with officials and the families of the victims. Hughes was wanted for possession of a firearm by felon and two counts of felony flee to elude out of Lincoln County, North Carolina. A standoff lasted for several hours before police cleared the scene.
Authorities are working to learn where the guns were bought. Authorities also recovered ammunition and magazines for the weapons at the scene. A fifth officer with the Statesville Police Department was also injured in the shooting, the department said on Facebook. Overall crime in Charlotte is up 11% due to a recent spike in property crime, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Thursday.
Despite a steady decline in murder rates in the United States since 1990, recent years have witnessed an unfortunate uptick. Charlotte stands out with one of the nation's highest murder rates, surpassing other cities that reported crime. In Charlotte, there were a total of 108 murders, translating to 11 murders per 100,000 people, underscoring the pressing need for continued efforts to address and reduce severe violent crime in the area. CMPD saw a 10% increase in the number of guns seized last year, taking 3,432 guns off Charlotte's streets. Robberies were down 8%, arsons were flat and aggravated assaults saw a 3% increase from 2022. That includes a 7% increase in the number of shootings, with CMPD reporting 4,261 shootings in 2023.
New details emerge after 4 law enforcement officers killed in shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina
However, it's important to recognize that this doesn't imply that the entire city is unsafe. "Officer Joshua Eyer has passed away tonight from his injuries after being shot in the line of duty this afternoon while assisting other officers with the apprehension of a suspect," CMPD said in a statement on social media. "Yesterday, North Carolina and our country lost four heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty working to protect our communities," Cooper said in a statement. "Our prayers are with their friends and families as they navigate this difficult time and we remember and honor the lives of these law enforcement officers." CMPD also said teens are partially responsible for the rise in property crimes.
As officers approached the suspect, the man opened fire, striking multiple officers. As officers returned fire, more shots struck additional officers. Of those, eight cases are being reviewed by the district attorney and may be removed from the count. CMPD touted its homicide unit's 80% solve rate over the last five years, claiming that number is significantly higher than the national average of 52%. That same month, three officers in Baton Rouge, La., were killed, and three others were wounded in what the authorities described as an “ambush.” The gunman was killed during a shootout.

Proactive work this quarter resulted in a rise in overall arrests (up 13%) and firearm seizures (up 12%), despite facing a department and nationwide officer shortage. This year, robberies, aggravated assaults and homicides were all down.
During Thursday’s press conference, CMPD also said arrests have been on the rise compared to 2022, with 11,634 so far this year compared to 10,327 last year. For example, in 2023, 582 of 838 auto theft arrests were juvenile suspects. Now, Darrell Gregory, who leads Youth Based Strategies of Mecklenburg County, says a lot of small community groups working on reducing violence have been overlooked by CMPD, the city, county and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Tyler Wilson told CBS affiliate WBTV he was working at home when he heard officers calling for someone to come out of a neighboring house. Eyer, who had been with the department for six years, "fought for his life for several hours before succumbing to his injuries," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement.
A suspect was killed in a shootout with police, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) released its first-quarter crime statistics for 2022, showing a slight increase in overall crime, violent crime and property crime from this time last year. The other wounded officer was identified Tuesday by the Statesville Police Department as Statesville police Cpl. Casey Hoover, who was also a member of the task force. Hoover suffered a gunshot wound to an area of his upper torso that was unprotected by his bulletproof vest, Statesville police said in a news release. He underwent surgery and is stable and expected to make a full recovery, police said. Two other slain law enforcement officers, identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, were from the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction assigned to the task force.
